What motivated Facebook to choose PHP and Twitter to choose Rails? [closed]

Why did Facebook use C++ beside PHP?

While Facebook chose PHP and Twitter chose Ruby on Rails, I stopped and asked myself a question! why did they chose PHP and Ruby on Rails? Why not ASP.NET or Java? Is it because of bieng open source? or what?. I just want to know the right reason so I can examine their vision and decide which technology should I use if I want to build something unique.
